The TiVo Stream 4K just received a surprise OS update from Android 10 to Android 12. For a nearly six-year-old device, that would seem like good news.
Instead, owners are finding that the update forcibly removes apps like Downloader, Projectivy Launcher, and ADB utilities.
Reports on this Tivo Stream 4K update have been flooding in across Reddit and other forums. After the Android 12 update, the device is automatically uninstalling third-party applications.
Downloader gets removed the moment you install it from Google Play. Custom launchers like Projectivy and ADB tools are being wiped as well.
One Tivo Stream user posted a short video on this Reddit thread showing what happens when trying to install Downloader from Google Play.
Another Reddit thread on Projectivy Launcher highlighted the issues with this new Tivo Stream update.
Three companies share ties to this device. TiVo originally released it, SEI Robotics manufactures it, and Channel Master is now the sole seller. No one has taken responsibility, but the goal appears obvious: force users into the default launcher and block customization.
Community members traced the issue to a hidden system app called CoreService that monitors new installs and removes anything it flags.
Owners have found a workaround using ADB. Connect to your device over ADB and run the following: adb shell pm disable-user com.nes.coreservice
After disabling CoreService, you can reinstall Downloader and other removed apps. Some users report needing to execute the ADB entry multiple times before it sticks through a restart.
An alternative involves going to Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Core Services. Force stop the app, clear data and cache, then revoke permissions. Head to Google Play afterward and reinstall Downloader.
