A Stremio user is sounding the alarm after being contacted by Spectrum with a “Copyright Complaint Notice” after using the application on various devices.

Stremio User Gets Copyright Notice

In a screenshot uploaded to a popular Reddit thread, the message noted that the individual used Spectrum internet to “improperly copy, share, or stream copyrighted content”. You can see it pictured below.

The user notes that he has the following Setup with the Stremio App:

He also pointed out that he doesn’t use a VPN and this is likely where the issue lies.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Real-Debrid Doesn’t Stop ISP Copyright Warnings

One mistake a lot of people make is assuming their debrid provider keeps them safe from these notices. It doesn’t. Real-Debrid speeds up streaming by pulling high-quality cached files, but it has nothing to do with hiding your online activity.

If Torrentio is still pulling from public torrent providers, your IP address will show up in those swarms whether you’ve linked your Debrid service or not. This is why several people in the Reddit thread said they received warnings even with RD connected.

The only way to keep your internet provider from monitoring this traffic is by running a VPN before opening Stremio. Without it, you are exposed to the same risks as anyone else downloading from public torrent pools.

As we reference multiple times in our Stremio Setup Tutorial, the Stremio App directly access torrent providers to serve up content on this media platform.

This means that the end users’ IP Address could be made available to the public or that your Internet Service Provider will be able to to see what you are streaming.

A handful of advanced users in the thread pointed out that you can reduce your exposure by disabling all public providers in Torrentio. This forces the addon to use Real-Debrid, Premiumize, TorBox, or other private services instead of connecting to open torrent swarms.

Taking this step won’t replace the protection of a VPN, but it does limit how often your device reaches out to public sources that copyright bots monitor around the clock.

Anyone worried about warnings from their internet provider may want to adjust these settings or switch to addons that don’t rely on torrent technology at all.
