The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced the closure of Y2Mate.com and 11 related stream-ripping websites.

These platforms converted YouTube videos into downloadable MP3 files, a practice the music industry has fought against for years.
The 12 domains received over 620 million visits during the past year from users worldwide. Y2Mate had been listed on the USTR Notorious Markets Report and faced blocking orders across 13 countries. Despite these efforts, the site continued operating until this recent enforcement action.

The site operator agreed to permanently shut down all 12 domains and stop violating copyright holders’ rights. IFPI now controls most domain names, including Y2Mate.com, Yt1s.com, Utomp3.com, Tomp3.cc, and Y2mate.gg.

Stream-ripping became a major concern for record labels around 2019. While traditional piracy had declined, these conversion tools posed a different challenge. Users could access YouTube’s massive music library and convert streams into permanent downloads.
The industry previously shut down YouTube-MP3 in 2017 and won an $83 million judgment against 2conv.com and FLVTO.biz in 2022. However, new services kept appearing to replace those that closed.
If you search for ‘Y2Mate’ on Google you will find dozens of clone websites offering the same ripping functions. This is the exact same scenario we see with free streaming sites.

Records indicate these sites operated from Vietnam. The announcement provides limited details about how IFPI secured the agreement or what settlement was reached. No lawsuit appears in public records, and no financial penalties were disclosed.
Most domain registration records show “Withheld for Privacy” status, making it difficult to trace ownership. At least one domain now displays a shutdown notice explaining the closure.
IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley called this “a major milestone” and noted it represents “a first of its kind success in Vietnam for the music industry.” The organization plans to target other infringing services operating from that region.
The following 12 domains were shut down by the IFPI as part of this enforcement action:
While IFPI’s possession of these domain names should reduce traffic, dozens of Y2Mate clones are already appearing in Google search results.
Authorities will find it difficult to keep pace with new sites launching constantly. Whether this closure proves permanent remains uncertain, as these services have historically resurfaced under different names.
