The Ugoos AM9 is a high-end Android Box released in July of 2025, powered by the Amlogic S905X5 CPU. It’s designed for 4K streaming, media playback, and light gaming, with a focus on advanced codec support and AI enhancements. It runs a stock Android 14 AOSP build (not certified Android TV), includes Google Play Store support, APK side-loading, and Ugoos-specific customizations like root access toggles, OTA firmware updates, and a dedicated settings menu for monitoring CPU temperature, RAM usage, and frequency scaling. It ships with a Bluetooth remote featuring voice control, gyro for air mouse functionality, and programmable buttons. Pricing on United States Amazon is $179.99.

I purchased the AM9 from United States Amazon Website in September of 2025.  It arrived within 2 days which beats waiting for China sites like AliExpress for shipment.  Glad to see Ugoos now has an official store on the United States Amazon site!

If you’re a iptvsubscrib you may find my First Impressions Video where I go through initial setup and point out the pros and cons of the device.  I also provide instructions on setup for those who do purchase this streaming device.  Throughout this review you will also find comments from various TROYPOINT Patrons that I pulled directly from the discussion regarding my First Impressions Video.  I value the input from those who have already used the AM9 and I will highlight some of those below.

I’ve spend approximately two weeks using the Ugoos AM9 on a regular basis and here’s my review.

Ugoos AM9 Ports

Android 14 AOSP Not Android TV

I want to start with the operating system because this will be the biggest pain point for new users.  The Ugoos AM9 is equipped with Android 14 AOSP (Android Open Source Project) which is similar to what you find on phones and tablets.  In short, Ugoos isn’t using Android TV and they’ve manipulated the Android operating system to work on the television.

Android 14

One of the most significant differences between the Ugoos AM9 and a standard Android TV device is the Google Play Store.

Unlike licensed Android TV boxes, the Ugoos AM9 uses the same Google Play Store found on most Android phones and tablets. This gives you the flexibility to install a wider range of apps that aren’t specifically optimized for a television screen. The trade-off is that some apps available on the Android TV Play Store might not be directly accessible on the AM9.  Thankfully, Ugoos offers a mouse button on the remote so you can navigate these apps designed for mobile devices.

For some, this is a clear advantage, offering more control over which apps they can install. For others, the lack of a curated, TV-optimized store is a drawback.

Fortunately, this isn’t a major issue. You can easily get around any app limitations by side-loading apps or using alternative app stores like Aptoide TV.

Ultimately, your preference for the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) app store over the certified Android TV version will come down to your personal needs. No matter your choice, you can always find a way to install the apps you need.

Ugoos AM9 Meant for APK & IPTV Users

The Ugoos AM9 is built for users who rely on popular APKs and IPTV services. It’s not officially certified for apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, which means that these apps lack full HD quality and the interface is hard to navigate. The box’s un-certified status is a key thing to keep in mind, and it’s likely other certified streaming apps won’t work well either.

But if your primary interest is free content, this isn’t a problem. This box excels with apps like Kodi, Stremio, Syncler, TiviMate, SmartTube, and XCIPTV, all of which were tested and worked flawlessly. These apps, combined with IPTV services, offer a vast amount of content.

For those who still want Netflix or Prime Video, you can find working APKs for both. However, these unofficial versions are not optimized for a TV and will require using the remote’s mouse toggle for navigation. The video quality is also limited to standard definition. While the AM9’s up-scaling feature helps, it won’t give you the crisp, high-definition image you get from a certified device.

In short, the Ugoos AM9 is a great choice for cord-cutters who prefer flexibility over official app support.  Also, many cord cutters are looking to convert to non-certified Android Boxes due to possible side-loading restrictions to be introduced in 2026 by Google.

Video Up-scaling

Ugoos video upscaling

The Ugoos AM9 utilizes the Amlogic S905X5 chipset, which features a dedicated Neural Network Accelerator (NNA) with a Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) architecture. This hardware enables a technology known as AI-Based Super Resolution (AI-SR).

Unlike basic up-scaling, which simply stretches pixels to a higher resolution, AI-SR uses machine learning algorithms to intelligently enhance the video. The process works like this:

Analysis: The AI analyzes the low-resolution video frame by frame.

Pattern Recognition: It recognizes patterns, textures, and details that are often lost in lower-resolution content (e.g., from 720p or 1080p sources).

Inference and Enhancement: Using its trained model, the AI “fills in” the missing details and information. It doesn’t just duplicate pixels; it generates new ones to create a sharper, clearer, and more detailed image.

Output: The result is an up-scaled video that looks noticeably better, with reduced blurriness and improved sharpness, which is then outputted to your 4K TV.

This AI-SR technology is particularly effective on lower bitrate videos, as it can compensate for the compression artifacts and lack of detail.

Here’s a helpful comment from TROYPOINT Patron sim_bill regarding up-scaling on the Ugoos AM9.

Funny! But back to the AM9 topic for a moment. After almost 3 weeks of using the AM9, I switched back to my PS6 Unlimited on my LG 65” Oled to again compare the video quality. It can be confirmed that the AM9 has the better picture quality. Whether it is live tv, movies or tv series, the AM9, with it’s new processor, AI and Amlogic upscaling, has a visibly crisper, more detailed, higher resolution picture on just about every streaming source than the PS6. One would think that at least double the price of the AM9, the PS6 would at least rival its video quality. It doesn’t even come close on 720 or 1080p streams with upscaling.

Ugoos AM9 Supports 3rd Party Launchers

Ugoos AM9 supports 3rd party launchers

The Ugoos AM9 comes with 2 basic launchers to choose from.  I’m not a big fan of either launcher so I installed Projectivy and it works great!  One downfall within Projectivy is that we can’t enable accessibility options due to Android 14 restrictions but this isn’t a deal breaker.

Here’s a helpful comment from TROYPOINT Patron ScoobyDoosSpots regarding one of the included 3rd party launchers on the Ugoos AM9.

One suggestion is that you should really spend a minute showing the built in ULauncher. I also use Projectivy but think you should at least show the capabilities of the built in launcher. It is pretty capable if you spend a little time customizing it and it is nice that Ugoos includes 2 different choices out of the box for those that don’t want to go third party.

Here are a couple screenshots from the optional ULauncher that comes with the Ugoos AM9

Numerous Settings Available

What makes Ugoos devices stand out from standard, certified Android TV boxes is the incredible level of customization they offer. The AM9 is no exception, with a ton of custom settings that let you fine-tune the box exactly how you want it.

I provide a detailed settings walk-through in my First Impressions Video available to

Settings Walk-through

Ugoos AM9 Performance

The Ugoos AM9 is a fast Android Box that comes with a powerful processor that creates a lag-free experience when navigating the user interface.  Some complain that it only comes with 4GB of RAM but I don’t see a difference when comparing to devices with more RAM when streaming.  If you’re someone who only uses this to stream media with no gaming interests, this should fit your needs perfectly.

Download/Upload Speed Tests

Ugoos AM9 Download Speeds

The following download/upload tests were done with the Ugoos AM9 being connected to my ASUS RT-AX86U WiFi 6 Router.  I’m using Surfshark for the VPN tests.  I’m measuring speeds with the Analiti application that I installed through the free TROYPOINT Toolbox.  For some reason, Analiti can’t be installed on this device through the Google Play Store.

Gigabit Speeds

VPN Off: 869 Mbps Download & 514 Mbps Upload

VPN On: 302 Mbps Download & 218 Mbps Upload

WiFi Speeds

VPN Off: 619 Mbps Download & 277 Mbps Upload

VPN On: 232 Mbps Download & 117 Mbps Upload

VPN Router Speeds

This test was done on the same router as above measurements (ASUS RT-AX86U WiFi 6 Router) with Surfshark VPN integrated.

Gigabit Speeds: 691 Mbps Download & 356 Mbps Upload

WiFi Speeds: 555 Mbps Download & 297 Mbps Upload

Here’s a video that shows how to run a VPN off router for whole-home protection with blazing fast download/upload speeds.  This is the same setup that I used in the VPN router speed test.

Best WireGuard VPN Router Setup Video

These are strong download speeds with VPN on and off.  Remember, you only need 25-35 Mbps to stream 4K content.

Ugoos UR-02 remote with Voice+Gyro (air mouse)

Ugoos AM9 remote

The Ugoos AM9 remote is a feature that shouldn’t be ignored! It’s perfect for the TVQuickActions Pro app, letting you easily remap the colored buttons at the bottom or change the function of other keys you don’t use.

The remote comes with instructions to pair it to your TV, so you can control the power, volume, and input all from one remote. I found this worked perfectly on both TVs I tried it with. Here’s a pro tip: when you’re pairing the remote, make sure your TV is turned off first.

I really like that the remote has two sets of power and volume buttons. One set handles the box itself, and the other controls your TV. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference.

Finally, the mouse toggle button is a must-have. Since this device uses the phone/tablet version of the Google Play Store, there are thousands of apps you’ll need a mouse for, and this feature works flawlessly.

What I Dislike

  • Non-Android TV Google Play Store
  • No Dolby Vision support

After spending two weeks testing the Ugoos AM9, it’s pretty clear that I still favor certified Android TV OS over Android AOSP. But honestly, this isn’t a deal-breaker because once the device is setup properly, we don’t need to use the air mouse very much. The thing to remember is that certified Android TV usually doesn’t let you tweak all the custom settings found on the AM9.  If you enjoy customizing your device, the Ugoos AM9 is probably right for you.

The biggest challenge for most users is getting used to basic Android, which feels a bit different than Android TV. Luckily, the Downloader App by AFTVNews is in the Play Store, so setup is fast and easy even if the OS is new territory.

I stopped knocking points off my reviews for lack of Netflix or Prime Video certification because most TROYPOINT fans aren’t using those platforms in the first place. This box is truly meant for streaming pros who rely on APKs, Kodi, and IPTV. If you need Netflix, this isn’t the right pick since it lacks licensing for the app; side-loading is possible, but it’s clunky and stuck with SD quality.

For most cord cutters, the Ugoos AM9 is almost overkill, packing crazy performance, mountains of settings, and blazing download speeds that only the most demanding users really need. Sure, there are quirks to standard Android, but with a handful of workarounds you can shape it into the perfect streaming machine.

Many will argue that there’s not need to invest this much money when there are budget devices such as the Onn 4K Pro and Onn 4K Plus that fit most needs.

How to Buy

As mentioned earlier, I purchased my Ugoos AM9 on the United States Amazon Website.  It arrived in a couple of days and I’m happy to see that Ugoos now has a United States presence on Amazon!
