In a world where most Android gadgets stop getting updates within a couple of years, Nvidia’s Shield TV stands out.

Launched in 2015, this set-top box has received updates for a full decade—something unheard of for any Android-powered device. Nvidia’s continued support is not just about fixing bugs or security gaps. It reflects a deeper commitment to customers who invested in the Shield years ago.
From the start, Nvidia treated the Shield as more than just a product. According to senior VP of hardware engineering Andrew Bell, it was a passion project. While early Shield devices came with a heavy gaming focus, that shifted over time to target a broader group: streaming fans who care about performance.
Nvidia originally wanted to create a full-fledged game console. The idea started years earlier, but the missing piece was a solid user interface. That changed in 2014 when Google expanded Android to TVs. The Shield TV followed shortly after in 2015.
The original pitch leaned heavily on local and cloud-based gaming through GeForce Now. But when the gaming angle didn’t take off as expected, Nvidia adjusted. By 2017, the Shield evolved into a high-end streaming box that still had gaming in its DNA. That identity helped separate it from cheaper competitors that often lacked polish or long-term support.
“We said, ‘Maybe the soul is that it’s a streamer for gamers,’” Bell explained. That direction shaped the 2017 and 2019 updates, which added better audio and video capabilities. Through it all, the company stuck with a premium price—$200 for the Pro model—even as competitors undercut them.
A big part of the Shield TV’s staying power is Nvidia’s update strategy. The device has gone from Android 5.0 all the way to Android 11. That sort of support is unheard of in Android circles.
Even more impressive is how Nvidia handled setbacks. In 2023 and 2024, no new software updates were released, causing concern in the community. But behind the scenes, the team was working to fix a serious security flaw tied to the same Tegra X1 chip used in the Nintendo Switch.
Rather than abandon the older models, Nvidia chose to develop a brand-new security stack. That process took about 18 months, but it resulted in a fix that kept even 2015 and 2017 Shields secure and functional. The effort paid off in early 2025 with the release of Shield Experience 9.2, which quietly addressed the problem.
Despite its age, the 2019 Shield TV is still one of the best Android TV Boxes available today. Nvidia continues to produce the device, even though some of its components are no longer being manufactured.
“We still build it. People still buy it. The sales haven’t really changed,” said Bell. Dropping the price didn’t boost demand, and neither did flashy marketing. The user base seems steady and loyal, no matter what.
That success has sparked discussion inside Nvidia about a potential new device. Bell confirmed the team continues to experiment with new Shield TV models in their labs. While nothing has been finalized, ideas are floating around.
Set-top boxes come and go. Most fade fast, victims of broken promises and poor support. Nvidia’s Shield has defied those odds. It wasn’t just a solid streaming device; it was a testbed for what long-term support could look like on Android.
At $200, it’s not cheap—but people who bought the Shield TV in 2015 are still using it today. And with Nvidia still shipping updates and keeping production alive, there’s no sign of that changing.
While new Shield hardware isn’t confirmed, the company hasn’t ruled it out. Bell’s comments make it clear: as long as people keep buying and using the Shield, Nvidia will keep backing it.
