A hacker recently claimed to have stolen databases from a NordVPN development server. However, NordVPN has now confirmed these claims are completely false.
This incident serves as an important reminder for cord-cutters. Not every breach headline you see online is true.
On January 4th, a threat actor posted on a breach forum claiming to have accessed a “NordVPN Salesforce development server.” The poster used a brand new account with the name “1011.”
The alleged leak included Salesforce API keys, Jira tokens, and SQL database dumps. However, several red flags suggested something was off.
Timestamps in the samples showed dates from August 2025, which was five months before the post appeared. The leaked API keys also appeared to be in the wrong format.
Laura Tyrylyte, head of Public Relations at Nord Security, released a clear statement.
“Claims that NordVPN’s internal Salesforce development servers were breached are false.”
The company’s investigation found that the leaked files came from a third-party platform where they briefly had a trial account about six months ago.
Because this was only a preliminary test, no real customer information ever touched this environment. No passwords, IP addresses, financial details, or production source code were involved. NordVPN confirmed that user accounts remain secure and no action is required.
VPN security is a real concern for anyone who streams content online. Fake breach announcements are becoming more common in an age of AI-generated misinformation.
Before reacting to any security news, verify information through official sources and look for red flags like new accounts posting claims, impossible timestamps, and incorrect technical details.
This incident also highlights why reputable VPN providers matter. Companies like NordVPN invest heavily in security infrastructure and undergo independent audits.
On the other hand, free VPNs for example lack these protections, sell your data to advertisers, and are way more susceptible to breaches. So just keep that in mind if you are ever considering a free VPN.
