A serious security incident has exposed the personal information of nearly one million medical marijuana patients.

Ohio Medical Alliance LLC, operating under the brand Ohio Marijuana Card, left two databases unprotected, allowing public access to highly sensitive patient data.

Cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered the breach and reported the exposed databases contained 957,434 records totaling 323 GB of data, all accessible without passwords or encryption.

  • Medical intake forms and physician certifications
  • Health evaluations for conditions like PTSD and anxiety

Company Response and Impact

Ohio Medical Alliance provides telemedicine and in-person services across six states, having served over 330,000 patients nationwide.

After Fowler’s disclosure, the company restricted database access within one day but provided no direct response to the security researcher.

The timeline of exposure remains unknown, raising concerns about whether others accessed the data before it was secured. The company has not clarified if the databases were managed internally or by third-party contractors.

Serious Risks for Patients

This type of breach creates multiple dangers for affected individuals. Social Security numbers combined with driver’s license photos provide everything needed for identity theft and financial fraud. Medical records could be misused to access additional healthcare information.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, this breach represents just one of many data incidents we can expect to see in the coming years.

As more companies collect personal information digitally, the chances of your data being compromised will only increase.

Individuals must stay vigilant by monitoring their credit reports, using strong passwords, and limiting what personal information they share online.
