As Age Verification laws rolled out across multiple countries in 2025, users reacted by downloading free VPNs. Ironically “free” VPNs are an illusion of privacy.
The UK’s Online Safety Act took effect in July, requiring photo ID or document images for platform access. Many turned to VPNs to avoid these privacy-invasive checks.
VPN downloads spiked on app stores after these laws launched. Most downloaded apps were free VPN services that promise anonymity.
These services don’t solve privacy concerns, they create new problems by selling user data and exposing devices to security threats.
According to a 2025 VPN Transparency Report, the statistics behind free VPNs tell a very disturbing story:
Free VPN providers need revenue sources. Most sell browsing data to advertisers and marketing firms.
Hotspot Shield injected advertisements into browsers using techniques similar to cybercriminal malware distribution. The service also redirected shopping traffic through partner networks to earn unauthorized commissions.

Free VPNs claim they don’t track usage in their privacy policies. These claims are difficult to verify without independent audits.

Free VPNs may use outdated encryption protocols that leak personal information during browsing sessions. Google recently warned about fake free VPNs delivering malware to devices.
Premium VPN services provide audited no-logs policies, operate from privacy-friendly jurisdictions, and earn trust through user reviews. These providers often include extra features like threat protection and password managers.
Age verification laws created privacy concerns worldwide. Free VPNs don’t solve these problems, they actually make things worse.
These services have documented histories of data leaks, selling user information, and enabling malicious code injection.
