Amazon just revealed the first device running Fire OS 14, and it’s not a Fire TV Stick or Cube.

Amazon Reveals First Fire OS 14 Device

Instead, the company quietly listed a budget Onida brand smart TV on its developer specs page, sold only in India. For cord-cutters hoping Android 14 would breathe new life into Fire TV streaming hardware, this is a major letdown.

Amazon’s New Fire OS 14 Device

The Onida Fire TV is a low-end 4K QLED television available in 43-inch and 55-inch models. According to Amazon’s developer documentation, it runs Fire OS 14, built on Android 14.

The TV ships with just 2 GB of RAM and operates as a 32-bit device. Anyone who expected 64-bit support and stronger specs will be disappointed. Its one bright spot is 32 GB of internal storage.

About a year ago, Amazon announced plans for an Android 14-based Fire OS. At that time, Fire OS 8 was still based on Android 11, and fans worried the company might ditch Android for its Vega OS platform.

Vega OS launched to heavy criticism from power users who depend on sideloading and are frustrated with Amazon’s crackdown of third-party apps.

Why Fire TV Users Should Be Concerned

The biggest fear is that Fire OS 14 may never reach standalone streaming devices like the Fire TV Stick or Cube. Amazon has refused to confirm whether those products will receive Android-based updates going forward.

What makes this worse is that Amazon appears to be running two separate strategies.

TV manufacturers don’t want Vega OS due to its many limitations, so Amazon is likely offering them Fire OS 14 to keep those partnerships alive. Meanwhile, the company continues pushing Vega OS on its own Fire TV hardware.

That means Fire TV Stick and Cube owners could be stuck with Vega OS and its restricted app environment for years, while only third-party TV brands get the benefits of Android 14.

Final Thoughts from Troy

Amazon debuting Fire OS 14 on a budget Indian smart TV does nothing to calm fears about the direction of Fire TV.

It looks more and more like the company is copying Roku’s playbook, locking down its platform with a closed operating system, aggressive ads, and zero flexibility for users who want control over their devices.

Cord-cutters who depend on sideloading should take note and consider moving to Google TV/Android TV boxes before Amazon shuts the door for good.
