Streaming services were once a cheap escape from expensive cable bills. That advantage keeps shrinking as more states add sales taxes to digital subscriptions.
Over 30 states now collect revenue from streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Spotify, with Maine joining the list on January 1, 2026.

State governments view streaming subscriptions as untapped revenue. Cable and satellite television faced taxation for decades, but digital platforms avoided these charges because they involved temporary electronic transfers rather than physical products.
As cord-cutting accelerated, lawmakers noticed the gap. States began updating their tax codes to capture revenue from changing consumer habits.
Maine became the most recent addition, implementing a 5.5% sales tax on streaming audio and video content delivered electronically.

The Maine Legislature approved this measure within a $320 million supplemental budget package signed by Governor Janet Mills in June 2025. Revenue projections show the tax will generate about $5 million initially, climbing to $14.3 million annually by 2029.
While individual charges may seem minor, households juggling four or five services, however, could pay an extra $5 monthly just in state taxes.
These costs compound the price hikes streaming platforms already implemented. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and others raised rates multiple times over the past two years. Content libraries also contracted as studios pulled shows for competing services.
The original appeal of cord-cutting centered on saving money compared to $200+ cable packages. Between rising subscription fees and spreading state taxes, that math grows harder to justify for budget-conscious families.
