Indian based MKVCinemas has been shut down by ACE after identifying the operator and ceasing known domains.

This operation had attracted millions of users looking for free access to movies and TV shows. ACE also disabled a high-traffic tool used for cloning cloud drives — a tool that helped spread pirated content across services in both India and Indonesia.

MKVCinemas was among the most visited piracy sites in the region. Between 2024 and 2025, its websites drew in 142.4 million visits from users around the globe, with the bulk of traffic coming from India’s fast-growing streaming market.

Operator Identified and Domains Transferred

After conducting an in-depth investigation, ACE was able to track down the person running MKVCinemas. The operator was located in Bihar, India. Rather than face legal action, they agreed to shut down the movie streaming site and hand over control of 25 domains linked to the network.

ACE noted that former MKVCinemas web addresses now redirect to ACE’s official “Watch Legally” page, but we found that is not always particulary true.

Cloud Cloning Tool Also Shut Down

Alongside the MKVCinemas takedown, ACE dismantled another piece of the piracy puzzle: a drive-to-drive cloning tool that had become a go-to method for illegal distribution.

This tool worked by copying files from a hidden cloud server directly into the end-user’s cloud account. The method made it difficult for copyright holders to remove the source files. Since the original files weren’t publicly posted, they avoided traditional takedown notices, making enforcement almost impossible.

During the same one-year period, this tool had seen even more traffic than MKVCinemas, reaching 231.4 million visits worldwide.

According to Larissa Knapp, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Protection Officer at the Motion Picture Association, the damage from piracy is more than just lost money

. She warned that illegal streaming exposes users to serious risks and takes money away from local creators and the broader entertainment industry.

Piracy isn’t a harmless shortcut. Our actions make clear that ACE will relentlessly pursue and dismantle illegal operations so audiences and creators can benefit from a secure, sustainable marketplace.

The shutdown of MKVCinemas is yet another representation of the work anti-piracy operations are doing to shut down these pirate apps, sites, and more.

As you can see, the operator of MKVCinemas did not face any criminal or civil charges and was only forced to turn over the website domains and cease operations. This varies from instances in the past where we have seen these developers face fines, jail time, and more.
