Farmers Insurance recently disclosed a significant data breach that exposed personal information belonging to more than one million customers.

The incident occurred through a compromised third-party vendor rather than a direct attack on the insurance company itself.

Farmers Insurance Breach Details and Timeline

On May 30, 2025, Farmers received notification from a third-party vendor about suspicious activity in their database containing customer information.

The investigation revealed that hackers accessed the vendor’s systems on May 29, stealing sensitive customer data. The compromised information includes:

  • Full names and addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Last four digits of Social Security numbers

Scope of Impact

Farmers Group filed notifications with state authorities reporting 1,071,172 affected individuals. Additionally, Farmers New World Life Insurance submitted a separate notification reporting 40,000 impacted customers in Maine alone.

The company serves approximately 10 million households across the United States with 19 million insurance policies, making this breach a significant portion of their customer base.

Response and Protection Measures

Farmers launched an investigation immediately after learning of the incident and notified law enforcement authorities. The third-party vendor’s monitoring systems helped detect and contain the breach quickly.

The insurance company is offering affected customers 24 months of free identity monitoring services through Cyberscout. Customers can check their eligibility by calling 1-833-426-6809.

This breach joins a growing list of insurance industry cyberattacks in 2025. Companies like Allianz Life, Aflac, Erie Insurance, UnitedHealthcare, and Philadelphia Insurance Companies have all reported similar incidents.

Final Thoughts

The Farmers Insurance data breach highlights the risks companies face through third-party vendors.

While the company wasn’t directly targeted, over one million customers still had their personal information compromised.

Affected customers should monitor their accounts closely and take advantage of identity protection services being offered.
